Spaans Dak (Oud-Heverlee)

The Place

Spaans Dak has a special place in my culinary travel book. It is the restaurant where I was introduced with the “High-tech cuisine” – the molecular kitchen – but also with high end gastronomy in general. The restaurant offers creative menus at a very, very reasonable price.

The Chef

A beautiful aspect about Spaans Dak is the family spirit: Chef and owner Michel Uyttendaele runs the place together with his two sons Jonathan (kitchen) and Kristof (wines). The chef himself has been cooking for more than 20 years now and is also assisted by Remco Kramer in the kitchen of Spaans Dak. The dynamic trio creates contemporary, original and creative dishes.

The Food

As we are visiting this restaurant approx. 4-6 times a year, we won’t post every menu up here. Instead, we prefer to write one general review and post some of our pictures occasionally.

On a culinary and service level, the restaurant offers a great entry to high-end gastronomy. Also, the price-quality level you find here is quite remarkable: The season signature menu (3 courses) costs approx. 35 Euros and 49 Euros with wine pairing. The diner menu (3 courses) is served at 37 Euros – and 51 with wine pairing. You could say that this is quite a normal price for a 3 course dinner, but once you see the dishes, you know it’s not.

In restaurant Spaans Dak, dishes come as paintings and these paintings will spoil your taste buds! In addition, 3 courses will be more than enough to satisfy one’s hunger (and this isn’t often the case in the high-end range of culinary restaurants). The plates are well filled, so you won’t leave hungry.

The Wines

Kristof Uyttendaele, Michel’s son and “wine responsible”, is learning fast and doing a good job on his wine choices. Considering the money you pay and the amounts you get, you won’t be disappointed.

The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience

This is a restaurant I recommend to everybody. High End Eaters, try it for the outstanding price-quality level. Low End Eaters, try it as an introduction into the contemporary high end cuisine. You won’t be disappointed!
