Schlosshotel & Restaurant Fiss (Fiss, Austria)

The Place

Schlosshotel Fiss is a remarkable family owned five star hotel in Fiss in Austria. The town of Fiss is located in the centre of the famous ski area of Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis, one of the biggest in Austria. At a height of 1436 meters, Schlosshotel Fiss is a top destination for sports lovers and the biggest and the only ‘ski-in ski-out’ hotel in the area. The hotel even features its own ski-shop and ski storage for each hotel room. In winter, it is all about winter sports here. However, this area is also a great summer destination, with plenty of activities such as hiking, mountain biking, or paragliding.

The Schlosshotel property was originally built in 1940 as a hunting lodge & guesthouse. In 1991, the Domenig family bought it, and in 2016, they celebrated no less than 25 years of management.

Hotel Director Kurt Hummer and owner Simone Domenig

During that period, the family transformed the property into a fantastic luxurious five star hotel with a world-class spa.

Many of the renovations (such as the new spa) were done in 2014 & 2015 so a big part of the hotel is modernised. Schlosshotel Fiss is open 9 months a year, with closing from mid-April until mid-June and in November, and during the closing months, new renovations are carried out each year.

The rooms & design

Schlosshotel Fiss has a unique and personal style that is described as ‘Contemporary aesthetic with Gemütlichkeit, classic comfort, elegance and individuality’. The interior of the common areas and the rooms & suites of Schlosshotel Fiss is luxurious, comfortable and timeless.

The hotel boasts 135 contemporary, luxurious Alpine style rooms & suites, ranging from 32 up to 105 square meters. All of them have beautiful views on the surrounding mountains and a private terrace. Amenities included luxury bath products from Susanne Kaufmann, flat screen TV’s, fireplaces, Nespresso machines, and much more. There is also a big carpark under the hotel for all hotel guests.

The hotel is family owned and clearly family oriented. All of the rooms are spacious, guaranteeing enough space and flexibility for bigger families. There is also a kids club, a family sauna, a waterpark, and even a kids cinema. When the kids are enjoying themselves, their parents can enjoy the other benefits of the property. Such as… fine dining.

The F&B policy is an essential part of the Schlosshotel Fiss experience. The main hotel restaurant is used for breakfast and dinner and can seat up to no less than 470 guests. That is remarkable, especially considering the level of quality that is offered here.

For dinner, the talented Executive Chef Christoph Geschwendtner presents a changing tasting menu in 4 courses where he uses fresh products only, all cooked à la minute. This great à la carte option is complemented with additional buffets with starters, desserts, salads & cheeses. The chef’s delicious menus are inspired by daily market offerings and are continuously changing with the seasons.

Sommelier and Restaurant Manager Christian Heinisch manages an impressive, beautiful wine cabinet inside the restaurant with great pleasure. The wine list features over 500 references and focuses on Austrian wines with some specialties from Austrian winegrowers.

A dining experience in the Schlosshotel can start with a stop in the central hotel bar where Bar Manager Dominic Maschinsky somehow knows everyone’s favourites. Guests can choose everything from homemade lemonades to the special Schlosshotel Fiss SHF gin, or one of the creative cocktails like Sake cocktails or a smoked Cohiba rum cocktail.

Besides the main restaurant there is also a lunch restaurant where guests can enjoy a variety of dishes, salads, cheeses, charcuterie and desserts from 13-16pm. Two times a week, there’s also an outdoor barbecue buffet. Schlosshotel Fiss offers a half board option to all guests, which is actually an extended full board option, taking into account the day restaurant which is also included for all guests! This half board program surely is one of the best and most qualitative ones in Europe making Schlosshotel Fiss one of the top overall gourmet hotels in Austria.

Tirol is easily accessible by plane or train, but the best way to explore the region is by car. The roads are in great condition and the surroundings are stunning. We hit the roads with a Forester 2.0i CVT Premium that Subaru lent us exclusively for this trip. A great and spacious 4×4 and a perfect choice for your winter or summer family holidays.

Thanks to options such as the Driver assist technology, which helps to automatically maintain distance from other cars, and the Vehicle Dynamics Control System, which detects strange behaviour from surrounding drivers, our trip became safer, easier and more comfortable.

Pictures in this article were made with the Fujifilm X-T2 Camera, our favourite compact, lightweight and robust camera with endless creative possibilities. Used lenses: XF 35mm 1.4 R for food shots, and XF 10-24 mm F4 R OIS for interior and outdoor pictures.
