Le Saint-James Hotel/Restaurant (Bouliac, France)

The hotel

The luxurious Relais&Chateaux Hotel & Restaurant Saint-James are located in Bouliac, a small village overlooking Bordeaux. The Hotel, also referred to as the balcony of Bordeaux, was the first hotel designed by Jean Nouvel (2008 winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize). Inspired by the traditional tobacco-drying sheds of his home region, the renowned architect designed four adjcent buildings in tawny metal trellises.

The hotel features eighteen rooms, which all offer a panoramic view over the city of Bordeaux and the surrounding countryside. All of the 15 bedrooms and 3 suites have preserved the spirit of Jean Nouvel’s original design and have been finished with contemporary furniture created by famous designers such as Mies Van Der Rohe and Jean Prouvé.

Great attention to detail is what makes Le Saint–James a remarkable hotel. All king size beds have a position at the correct height and direction to take in the outstanding views of Bordeaux, the vineyards and the River Garonne.

Each of the suites boasts a unique ambiance. One has a private terrace with Jacuzzi, another one a real Harley Davidson as part of the décor. Each suite has a décor complemented by furnishings from famous designers and a unique atmosphere. A concept and experience that makes you feel you are living in the very midst of the vineyards.

Since many years the works of different artists have been presented at the Saint-James and the art gallery changes every three months. All the works are for sale and private viewings of the galleries are available.

The restaurant

Restaurant Saint-James is the gastronomic restaurant of the hotel. It is located in the modern outbuilding and offers a frontal view on the own wine domain and the city of Bordeaux.

The interior is in line with the design of the hotel: stylish, modern, and with special attention to art and colours. Because the dining room has been built like a stage in three levels, all guests can enjoy the magnificent views. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer a panoramic view on the Garonne and the rows of Merlot vines from Saint-James that produce the local Saint-James ‘Vin du Jardin’. Restaurant Saint-James seats up to 60 diners and is open from Tuesday till Saturday. During summer guests can relax and enjoy dinner on the adjacent terrace.

The chef

Executive Chef Nicolas Magie is responsible for the kitchen. Daily fresh ingredients and local terroir products inspire his imaginative and delicious menu. This menu continuously changes with the seasons and the chef offers a cooking style with a classic French base, which is expanded with refined and modern touches.

Here are some snapshots from dinner in February 2017:

Located near Bordeaux, wines are very important at Le Saint-James as well. The cellar boasts around 2000 wines chosen by the sommeliers. Restaurant Director Fabio Rambaldi knows exactly how to spoil the guests in a friendly and professional way.
