La Soupe Populaire (Berlin, Germany)

The place

La Soupe Populaire is a remarkable restaurant housed in a former private brewery, the Bötzow Brauere, in the center of Berlin. The location is one of the major assets of La Soupe Populaire. In typical Berlin style, a dilapidated industrial building received a new life and was transformed into a restaurant, cocktail bar and exhibition space for contemporary art.

Upon entering, the location feels a bit rough, but the vintage furniture, modern art and creative accessories create a unique atmosphere.  The restaurant itself is spread over two floors and overlooks the exhibition space on the ground floor. A unique and true combination of food and art. Inside the brewery one can also find a nice cocktail bar: Le Croco Bleu.

The Chef & The food

The restaurant is created and inspired by Tim Raue, one of Berlin’s most famous chefs. Unlike his 2 Michelin star Restaurant Tim Raue (review coming soon), La Soupe Populaire is not a high-end fine dining restaurant. In this atypical restaurant, Tim Raue and his Head Chef Michael Jaeger serve German classics with a modern twist, such as the sour potato soup of Grandma’, the ‘Königsberger klopse (a kind of meatball) with mashed potatoes and beetroot’, or the ‘Bee Sting cake with apricot’.  The à la carte dishes cost between 9 and 22 euros. For each art exhibition, Tim and Michael also create a special menu, inspired by the artworks.

The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience

La Soupe Populaire is one of those restaurants you can only find in liberal, creative cities like Berlin. While the food might not be the most surprising food you’ll eat during your stay, you do get a taste of real traditional German food, prepared with respect for the ingredients and the original recipes. Additionally, the setting in the old brewery is what makes La Soupe Populaire really unique and unforgettable. La Soupe Popular is currently one of the most hyped restaurants in Berlin and bookings should be made more than a month in advance (or try reserving very early in the evening). Do not miss sampling one of the great cocktails at Le Croco Bleu after your meal, a great experience on itself!
