Espai Sucre (Barcelona)

The Place

Espai Sucre is located in Calle de la Princessa in Barcelona, Spain, in a typical Barcelona styled mansion. Inside everything is very clean and red and brown colors dominate, giving the place warmth and coziness.

Espai Sucre is a concepts by the duo Butrón-Saguer and consists of a school of deserts and a “dessert only restaurant”. In their school, courses are addressed to those who conceive pastry as something more than a mere mathematical and precise combination of ingredients. Its knowledge is based on 3 mainstays: Knowing the raw material, knowing the traditional and state-of-the-art techniques and achieving the necessary judgment to manage all the information.

The Chef

Jordi Butrón and partners promote themselves as developers of a new way of conceiving restaurant-style pastry cooking. This team opened “the only dessert restaurant in the world” in February 2000, marrying this risky idea with their school of restaurant-style desserts.

The Food

Espai Sucre interprets desserts as complex dishes with its own personality and codes, where the result of combining techniques and unusual ingredients leads to surprising dishes. In fact, they don’t only serve desserts but also offer entire menus with always a sweet element integrated in every dish. Please find more info about the restaurant here.

Unfortunately I don’t have many notes on our menu (we visited Espai Sucre on 19/08/2009) but I do remember we took one of the “Tasting Menus”. I also remember having a delicious piece of sucking pig with a sweet sauce, as well as their famous dessert “Empireumatic”. Dishes are creative, well thought about , light and modern.

I copied some example menus (and photos) from their website below:

The Wines

Wines are, as everywhere in Barcelona, of good quality and come at low prices (5 glasses for 16 euos). We remember the combination wines – dishes and desserts was well thought about and we have good memories of the overall wine experience in this restaurant.

The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience

Due to the unusual nature of this restaurant (“The sweet experience”), dining here is something you will certainly remember. We had a great night out and experienced very original and surprising dishes. The combination sweet – salted like they serve it at Espai Sucre is something you won’t find anywhere else!
