Dumon – Fish in the fields (Wakkerzeel)

The Place

Set in the scenic town of Wakkerzeel (Flemish Brabant), on the outskirts of the student city of Louvain, the location of the restaurant Dumon leaves nothing to be desired. Located amidst the fields, the restaurant has a magnificent garden including swimming pool where, in the summertime, small parties can be held.

The restaurant also has its own small herbs garden so that fresh-picked herbs can actually be used during the service.

The Chef

Chef Rik Dumon clearly promotes a laid-back atmosphere by stating on his twitter page: “I decided to be happy. It’s excellent for my health”. No fussing around about Michelin stars here, just good (classic) food for honest prices. Nevertheless, the restaurant is mentioned in the 2012 GaultMillau and the Guide Lemaître.

Rik serves mainly classical, traditional French dishes. Focus is on quality and freshness, served in a classical way. Fish has the main role in his kitchen but the chef easily manages meat as well.

The Food

We went for lunch on 08 May 2012 and had the opportunity to take the “Restaurantweek” menu. During this week, you can enjoy a 3 course lunch for 22,5 euro or a 3 course dinner for 27,5 euro, in several gastronomical restaurants in Belgium. More info on this concept here.


We started with a house cocktail and enjoyed 3 small appetizers. A gazpacho, a small tomato/crab tartare and an excellent  tartare of herring that came with a little syringe filled with grain jenever.

Asperges – Gerookte zalm – garnalen – postelein – truffel
(Asparagus, salmon, shrimps, purslane, truffle)

Rode poonfilet (vis van het jaar) – Kasteelaardappel– dragonsaus– aspergepunten – crème van doperwtjes
(Red gurnard (fish of the year), Castle potatoe, dragon sauce, asparagus, crème from little green peas)

Lamsfilet – Confetti mix – grondwitlof – asperges – choronsaus – krieltjes – lamsjus
(Lam, confetti mix, ground chicory, asparagus, choron sauce, ‘kriel’ potatoes, lam juice)

Aardbeien – Vanille roomijs – coulis van aardbei – sorbet
(Strawberries, vanilla ice cream, coulis of strawberries, sorbet)

Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to have coffee & sweets. Next time!

The Wines

We thought the house cocktail (champagne with Aperol) was rather sweet to start the meal, but enjoyed the other wines with the menu. Good, but no big standouts though.

The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience

Dumon is a great place to sample a more classical and laid-back type of kitchen, in a beautiful green setting in Flemish Brabant. The place, with its several dining rooms, a big terrace, garden and pool, is a great spot to organize dining or family parties.

A qualitative, fresh and traditional cuisine is served in a classic presentation. For a surprising, innovative and creative kitchen this place might not get awarded, but go here for the pleasant dining experience in a lovely setting.
