De Tuinkamer (Beerzel)
De Tuinkamer is a 1 Michelin star restaurant in Beerzel, near Antwerp. It is located in a beautiful house in the center of the town, above a famous traditional bakery. The place has an authentic farm feeling, with loads of wood and beige/brown colors.
Ken Verschueren is the chef in De Tuinkamer and gained experience as sous-chef in Oud Sluis. He uses modern techniques, focuses on fish and incorporates special, contemporary ingredients in his dishes.
We opted for the dinner menu (3 courses, 40 €), which is available on weekdays for lunch and dinner (except Friday night). The restaurant’s flagship, however, is the ‘Menu De Tuinkamer’ (6 courses, 110 €).
We received 4 appetizers before the start of our dinner. We noticed that people who took the full menu (5 or 6 courses), were spoiled with 7 or 8 appetizers.
Liquid foie gras
Bread selection (crispy, tasty and very fresh!)
Olive oil selection
King prawn, herbs
Cod, béarnaise, mashed potatoes
Coffee & sweets
We had the wine pairing arrangement and started with a glass of champagne. Overall quality was good, but we felt the pairing with the dishes could have been better.
The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience
We had high expectations of De Tuinkamer, but were a little bit disappointed on this first visit. The quality of the food was good, but we weren’t blown away by the dishes or the service. Maybe we took the wrong menu, as we had the feeling the dishes of the degustation menu were more complex, but this shouldn’t be a reason to receive another level of quality. Also, the speed of serving was too high: we finished our 3 course meal, with appetizers and coffee, within 1.5 hours, which really is too fast. This restaurant has a lot of potential, and we’ll go back for sure to taste the degustation menu. We hope these small remarks will be optimized by then!
