De Plezanten Hof – Lunch by the river (Hamme)
The restaurant “De Plezanten Hof” (“the pleasant garden”) is located on a beautiful bend of the river “the Scheldt”, near Antwerp, in the middle of the natural area “Driegoten”. Even with the exceptionally calm and relaxing surroundings, the restaurant is easily accessible and offers a large parking area.
Inside, the restaurant offers an attractive modern interior and boasts a permanent art gallery, a tribute to the chef’s father. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy your meal on the terrace with a great view on the garden.
Lieve Putteman has been cooking for 25 years and delivers a classic kitchen with contemporary twists, served in a modern way. He’s not afraid to use uncommon ingredients and focuses on seasonal products.
The restaurant offers monthly gourmet menus, but you can just as well grab a quick lunch or eat à la carte. We went on Saturday the 16th of June 2012 and took the menu “Jonge Gastronomen”, an all-in formula for young people under 29 years old. We already tried this great formula at “Chateau du Myord” and “Fidalgo” and were excited about tasting this menu at “De Plezanten Hof”.
A trio of appetizers was presented: wasabi/mackerel, flan of shrimps, gazpacho.
Salmon, beet, granny smith apple, mango, asparagus
We were a bit disappointed about the salmon, which wasn’t 100% fresh.
Cod, Asparagus, Radish-Vermouth sauce
A nice piece of cod with an excellent radish-vermouth sauce. Best dish of the menu!
Chicken, asparagus, peas, white truffle
Quite classic, but honest tastes in this dish.
Fresh fruits, chocolate
Beautifully presented, this colorful dessert didn’t disappoint.
Coffee & sweets
Wines were good, but unsurprising. The wine stayed the same during the first and second dish, which was a bit of a disappointment.
The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience
We had a pleasant lunch in “The Plezanten hof”. Food and atmosphere were good, but we did not experience any surprising or memorable dishes. The restaurant is a great place for a good lunch or dinner in a luxury setting, without too much fuzz. Once again, the “Jonge Gastronomen” formula proved to be an excellent formula to try out a new restaurant.
