Bridges (Amsterdam, NL)

The Place

Restaurant Bridges is located in the heart of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. The beautiful restaurant is part of the luxury hotel Sofitel The Grand Amsterdam and welcomes curious tourists, loyal locals, and fanatic foodies from all over the world.

The restaurant is located at the front of the hotel (next to the canals) and has a separate entrance for its guests. The restaurant is positioned separately from the hotel to appeal to a wide audience. The building of the hotel and the restaurant are unique and tell part of the history of Amsterdam. Originally founded in 1411 as a Monastery, the building served as the city hall of Amsterdam for a long time. The room where the restaurant is located was the previous staff canteen. It was at the entrance of this room that artist Karel Appel painted the famous artwork ‘Vragende Kinderen’ in 1949. The interior of restaurant Bridges (designed by French interior designer Sybille de Margerie) is inspired by the shapes and colours from this artwork. It is modern, colourful, eclectic, and with a twist of humour. The restaurant also has a separate oyster bar and a private dining room.

The Chef

Bridges is ‘inspired by Ron Blaauw’, one of the Netherlands’s most famous chefs. When we visited Bridges last year, Executive Chef Joris Bijdendijk was responsible for the kitchen. Today, Bobby rust, previously working at Ron Gastrobar, is responsible for the cooking. At restaurant Bridges guests can choose between the Menu Du Chef, a lunch menu or several dishes à la carte.

The Wines

Wines are selected by Sommelier Jasper van den Hoogen, who gained experience in restaurants such as Parkheuvel, Duin & Kruidberg and Ciel Bleu. He presents the wines with flair and shows an impressive knowledge of beverages, wineries and wine regions. The wines enhance the food and he creates the pairings together with Executive chef Joris. Maître Vincent A. Van Riet is in charge of the dining rooms and makes sure his team serves guests in a welcoming, cosmopolitan style.
