Brasa Contemporary Grill Cuisine (Knokke)
Restaurant ‘Brasa Contemporary Grill Cuisine’, is one of Knokke’s new culinary acquisitions. The restaurant, specialized in the best of the grill, is located just outside the center of the known seaside resort at the Belgian coast. Brasa is a spin-off of the Michelin-starred restaurant Cuines, 33, located in the same street, just a few houses away. The concept, however, is entirely different: ‘Brasa’ means ‘grill’ in Catalan and that is exactly what to expect at Brasa restaurant. The best of the grill, served with a creative and international twist.
The interior of the restaurant is contemporary, playful, and nonchalant. Wooden tables in an industrial interior, colorful chairs and decorations, a big bar, and, of course, a maturing cabinet and an extended grill area. An ideal setting to gather with friends to enjoy unfussy food.
Chef Maurice De Jaeger and his girlfriend and hostess Deborah Hellburg manage Brasa together with the owners of Cuines, 33. Maurice and Deborah gained expertise in gastronomic restaurants such as Oud Sluis, Pure C, and Bartholomeus. Maurice has always had a passion for the grill, and the young chef even worked at a butcher (Deknock in Knokke) for several months, to get a better feel for meat processing and to prepare for the opening of Brasa.
At Brasa, most dishes are prepared on the grill. Guests choose one or more appetizers, a first course, a main course (most of which are grill specialties), and (if still hungry), a dessert. We started with the cocktail ‘Dark & Stormy’ (with rum, lemon and ginger beer) and Grissini, pan carasau and a dip of eggplant.
We ordered different dishes to share:
Oyster ‘Asian style’ / Oyster with granite of Grapefruit
Lobster / herbs & butter
Carpaccio of Wagyu
Side: fries, crunchy and full of flavor
Side: carrot salad with orange
Side: grilled asparagus
Side: spicy Asian salad
The pineapple dessert, grilled for hours with salted caramel, is already gaining a legendary status. It is served with home-made vanilla ice cream and baba au rum. Delicious, indeed!

The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience
With the opening of Brasa, Belgium welcomes another contemporary grill-specialised restaurant. Just like Elckerlijc (Maldegem) and Carcasse (Koksijde) the chef focusses on top quality meat (like Wagyu, Rubia and Chianina) but adds a personal touch with his original side dishes, his starters and the desserts. From the meat selection that we tasted, the Chianina convinced most with its delicate but strong flavour and solid structure. Brasa is a solid and reliable choice for meat or grill lovers visiting the Belgian coast, offering a good alternative to the many seafood restaurants nearby.
