Alkimia (Barcelona)

The Place

Alkimia is one of Barcelona’s (many) modern & creative restaurants. It has one Michelin star, and is awarded with ‘Best Pastry Chef award’ from “The Best in Gastronomy” guide, which gave the restaurant a score of 8.5. It is located near the Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona.

The Chef

Recognized as one of the city’s up and coming chefs, Jordi Vilà is building his gastronomical way with Alkimia since 2002.

The Food

Contemporary Catalan cuisine is what you can expect in Alkimia. We noticed the restaurant more than 6 years ago, when it was already claiming the molecular kitchen in Barcelona. We returned in September 2012 and had a very pleasant lunch experience. The lunch formula comes at 38.50 euro for 4 courses + appetizers. A great deal!

The Wines

We ordered (Spanish) wines à la carte and started with a Cava. Good, but no memorable experiences here.

The “Belgian Taste Buds” Experience

Alkimia is a name to watch out for in Barcelona. We felt the dishes were quite strong in flavors, so I imagine some will love the place, other won’t. As I’m a big fan of the Spanish kitchen with its salty accents (olives, anchovies, sausage …) and explicit flavors – I really liked it. Consider going here for lunch if you’re on a tighter budget.
